Moles

Mole removal procedures are commonly performed to eliminate an unwanted mole, either for cosmetic purposes or to prevent a mole from evolving into a more serious skin condition, such as cancer. There are various methods for mole removal, including:

Scalpel Removal: A scalpel is used to cut away the mole along with surrounding tissue. Stitches are typically required, and depending on the size of the mole, there may be a small scar after healing.

Punch Biopsy: A specialized punch tool is placed over the mole, which “punches” out the mole and the surrounding skin, effectively removing it.

Shave Biopsy: A razor blade is used to shave off the mole along with some of the surrounding tissue, leaving a flat wound that heals quickly.

Regardless of whether the mole is being removed for cosmetic or preventative reasons, we highly recommend performing a biopsy first to ensure the mole has not developed into melanoma. Biopsies are conducted in our office and sent to a specialist or lab for further analysis. In some cases, the entire mole is removed during the biopsy.

Mole checks are vital for everyone, whether you need a dermatologist for dark skin or light skin. Getting your moles checked on a regular basis could potentially save your life.

All of these mole removal techniques are quick procedures, and we use local anesthesia to numb the area, ensuring minimal discomfort. The main potential drawback of mole removal is the possibility of slight scarring after the wound heals.
